EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
